In 1983. Carl asked the Farmville Town Council to abandon the at-large voting system and adopt a Ward system of voting for members of Council. After several of Carl's requests were voted down, Carl then filed a lawsuit in U.S. Federal Court. The lawsuit, "Eggleston v. Crute," was settled in Carl's favor. In 1984, Carl ran as a candidate for Ward D and won. Carl U. Eggleston became the first African American to be elected to the Farmville Town Council. Following election, Carl started the Carl U. Eggleston Funeral Establishment located at 914 S. Main Street in Farmville. Carl has served or is serving on many organizations, including but not limited to:Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad, Farmville Chamber of Commerce, Randolph Lodge #30 Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Edwards Elk's Lodge, President Prince Edward County NAACP, Chair, Prince Edward County Democratic Committee. Carl was also put in the Congressional Record on May 7, 2018, by Congressional Donald S. Beyer, Jr.
